Vuoksenniska’s Church of the Three Crosses is sui generis among Alvar Aalto’s church designs. The use of free form and the artistic potential of lightning are taken as far as they can go.
The aim was to design a white building for a well-lit pine forest, that would glimmer between the pine trunks as the visitor approached, and appear in its full splendour at close quarters. When the building was almoust finished a whirlwind levelled many of the trees around it. The architectural expression of the exterior changed, but the overall effect remained. (Oksala)
